Katherine's Lode No. 2 (10.33 Acre Lode Mining Claim)

Katherine's Lode No. 2 is an unpatented lode mining claim in the Idaho Springs mining district of Clear Creek County. It is only 1 mile from the famous Argo Mine in Idaho Springs! It has a sister claim located directly next to it, Katherine's Lode No. 1. Because it is on National Forest land, it allows camping, hiking, dogs, and shooting. Scroll down for maps, including an interactive Google Maps window. Access with a 2WD vehicle depends on road conditions. A 4WD vehicle is recommended, as this road sees some usage and is rarely maintained.

This claim has many prospects, and an open grated tunnel. The tunnel has not been accessed or explored in a very long time, likely over 20 years. It has many tailings piles ready to be processed, and several collapsed/closed off tunnel sites in addition to the main grated tunnel. Access to the tunnel could be made by replacing the grate with a gate, allowing easy access to the workings. It is very close to the access road. There are ruins of cabins/work buildings, and many artifacts.

There is a lot of potential here to sink new shafts or tunnels, and areas to the East and West of the monument of discovery are good candidates for prospecting. Despite proximity to Idaho Springs, it is a generally peaceful area with few people, and great ease of access between different adits.

The ore seen in the tailings pile rates from low grade to high grade sulphide and quartzite type ores. Some free milling gold can be found here, although most of the gold is found in sulfides. The advantage of owning a historic claim is knowing that there is Gold for sure!

The main adit from the tailings pile. It is a good size tunnel, and fairly large tailings pile. Above the portal on the left is a schist/quartzite vein at about a 60 degree dip.

The portal to the main adit! This is a solid grate, a gate with a lock will need to be added. This is a very solid looking tunnel, and appears to run deep without collapses.

Looking through the grate into the tunnel, the end cannot be seen! There is not much debris on the floor, and it appears mostly dry. Ideal conditions! What is waiting to be discovered in there?
